Diamondĭiamond snake patterns represent colorful diamond shapes on different color backgrounds. The following snake patterns are the most common, covering almost all types of snakes. Which types of snake patterns are common? While snakes can look different from one species to another, they can be categorized according to their patterns. Snake patterns can also be seen as scale coloration that forms the appearance of a snake. This is specific to a species even if multiple patterns or colors are seen in the same snake species at times. Are snakes with a diamond pattern venomous?Ī snake pattern is the combination of colors that makes up the appearance of a snake.Which types of snake patterns are common?.They almost never bite, and if allowed to chew their mild venom into a hand (which is the only way a bite is going to happen), it may result in some temporary local swelling and redness. Their venom can quickly kill its prey, but is not something that should be considered harmful to humans or pets. They are primarily snake eaters, but also eat lizards and invertebrates. The head is relatively small and body thin compared to length. but elsewhere in Arizona they can reach sizes up to almost 3' long. These are typically small snakes, with adults in the Phoenix and Tucson areas usually in the 12-18" range. The upper body is slate-grey or even steel blue in appearance, sometimes with a yellow or cream colored ring just behind the head. The brilliant orange, yellow, and red coloration on the belly becomes exposed when the snake is stressed, with the tail forming a tight coil and the latter portion of body flopped upside-down. These are exceptionally beautiful snakes that often cause even snake-haters to admit that they're pretty. Interestingly, an encounter with this snake in a household might hint at a lurking termite problem. Possessing static front fangs and potent neurotoxic venom, there haven't been any reported fatalities from its bite. Distinct from the Eastern coralsnake genus, the Sonoran variety isn't perceived as threatening unless deliberately provoked. This leads many to mistakenly classify benign species like the Longnosed Snakes, Groundsnakes, and Shovel-Nosed Snakes as the Sonoran Coralsnake due to their superficial resemblance. Contrary to common belief, the well-known rhyme "red-touch-yellow" is an unreliable method for identifying this snake. Notably, its face is cloaked in black, and its tail lacks the final red band. Typically measuring less than 2 feet in length and as slender as a pencil in adulthood, its body showcases striking bands of black and red, interspersed with white or faint yellow stripes. The Sonoran Coralsnake, a venomous species, is infrequently spotted in the southern regions of Arizona. ![]() ![]() ![]() Hydrothermal circulation is generally thought to be required in the formation of jasper. If the density depends on θ θ or ϕ ϕ, you could change it by rotation hence, you would not have spherical symmetry. If the charge density is only a function of r, that is ρ = ρ ( r ) ρ = ρ ( r ), then you have spherical symmetry. One good way to determine whether or not your problem has spherical symmetry is to look at the charge density function in spherical coordinates, ρ ( r, θ, ϕ ) ρ ( r, θ, ϕ ). In (c), the charges are in spherical shells of different charge densities, which means that charge density is only a function of the radial distance from the center therefore, the system has spherical symmetry. In (b), the upper half of the sphere has a different charge density from the lower half therefore, (b) does not have spherical symmetry. In (a), charges are distributed uniformly in a sphere. The spherical symmetry occurs only when the charge density does not depend on the direction. Charges on spherically shaped objects do not necessarily mean the charges are distributed with spherical symmetry. Different shadings indicate different charge densities. Therefore, this charge distribution does have spherical symmetry.įigure 6.21 Illustrations of spherically symmetrical and nonsymmetrical systems. Although this is a situation where charge density in the full sphere is not uniform, the charge density function depends only on the distance from the center and not on the direction. Thus, it is not the shape of the object but rather the shape of the charge distribution that determines whether or not a system has spherical symmetry.įigure 6.21(c) shows a sphere with four different shells, each with its own uniform charge density. ![]() On the other hand, if a sphere of radius R is charged so that the top half of the sphere has uniform charge density ρ 1 ρ 1 and the bottom half has a uniform charge density ρ 2 ≠ ρ 1, ρ 2 ≠ ρ 1, then the sphere does not have spherical symmetry because the charge density depends on the direction ( Figure 6.21(b)). For instance, if a sphere of radius R is uniformly charged with charge density ρ 0 ρ 0 then the distribution has spherical symmetry ( Figure 6.21(a)). In other words, if you rotate the system, it doesn’t look different. Charge Distribution with Spherical SymmetryĪ charge distribution has spherical symmetry if the density of charge depends only on the distance from a point in space and not on the direction. To exploit the symmetry, we perform the calculations in appropriate coordinate systems and use the right kind of Gaussian surface for that symmetry, applying the remaining four steps. A charge distribution with planar symmetry.A charge distribution with cylindrical symmetry.A charge distribution with spherical symmetry. The field may now be found using the results of steps 3 and 4.īasically, there are only three types of symmetry that allow Gauss’s law to be used to deduce the electric field. Evaluate the electric field of the charge distribution. It is often necessary to perform an integration to obtain the net enclosed charge. This is an evaluation of the right-hand side of the equation representing Gauss’s law. Determine the amount of charge enclosed by the Gaussian surface. The symmetry of the Gaussian surface allows us to factor E → n ^ d A over the Gaussian surface, that is, calculate the flux through the surface.n ^ is easily determined over the Gaussian surface.Choose a Gaussian surface with the same symmetry as the charge distribution and identify its consequences. As examples, an isolated point charge has spherical symmetry, and an infinite line of charge has cylindrical symmetry. This is an important first step that allows us to choose the appropriate Gaussian surface. Identify the spatial symmetry of the charge distribution. ![]() ![]() (If E → E → and n ^ n ^ are antiparallel everywhere on the surface, then E → Furthermore, if E → E → is parallel to n ^ n ^ everywhere on the surface, then E → In these systems, we can find a Gaussian surface S over which the electric field has constant magnitude. It turns out that in situations that have certain symmetries (spherical, cylindrical, or planar) in the charge distribution, we can deduce the electric field based on knowledge of the electric flux. Gauss’s law is very helpful in determining expressions for the electric field, even though the law is not directly about the electric field it is about the electric flux.

![]() ![]() The expedition photographer, Herbert Ponting, and two of their dogs were on the floe as Scott and his crew watched it “heaved up and split” as the orcas “rose under the ice and struck it with their backs”. Robert Falcon Scott, leading his expedition to the South Pole in 1911, wrote in his journal of “a most extraordinary scene” as “some six or seven killer whales” appeared off an ice floe ahead of their ship, the Terra Nova. Orcas continued to lurk at the edges of human oceanic experience the further we encroached into their territory. The crew had to beat off the orca with a pole – only to end up eating six of their shipmates when their rations ran out.Ī whale defending itself against whaleboat attack, circa 1859. Suddenly the animal “made an unprovoked attack … with his jaws … After having struck the boat once, he continued to play with her, on every side, as if manifesting a disposition to renew the attack, and did a second time strike the bows of the boat, and split her stem”. Imagine, then, the consternation of the captain, whose ship had been sunk by one species of cetacean, only to find a 3.5m orca – which he called a “killer-fish” – following their flimsy boat. The story became the inspiration for Herman Melville’s Moby-Dick and was subsequently re-imagined in Nathaniel Philbrick’s bestselling book, filmed as In The Heart of the Sea starring Cillian Murphy and Ben Whishaw. The Nantucket whaleship was struck twice by a sperm whale, holing it and causing it to sink, and setting the crew adrift in boats. The greatest foundation myth of whales of our time was the sinking of the Essex in the Pacific in 1820. Whales had yet to acquire their modern status as emblems of environmental threat. In all these incarnations, orca are seen as ravenous hunters: indeed, their early species name, Orca gladiator, reflected this pugilistic sensibility. Twenty years later, the orca suddenly comes into focus in a remarkably realistic, almost god-like image – save for the odd whiskers – of an animal stranded in Hartlepool, as illustrated in Conrad Gessner’s Historiae Animalium of 1558. Olaus Magnus’s 1539 description appears almost prophetic in light of the current news stories: “An Orca is like a Hull turned inside outward a Beast with fierce Teeth, with which, as with the Stem of a Ship, he rends the Whales Guts and tears his Calves body, he quickly runs and drives him up and down.” ![]() But their actions do have a historical precedent.Įarly modern accounts of orca, or killer whales, saw them as sea demons. We’ll probably never know, unless we learn to translate their whistles and clicks. Sentient, matriarchal, tremendously successful as a species, their culture is much older than ours, and the recent reports of orca interactions off the Iberian peninsula force us to readdress the power of these marine mammals on our imagination: on what these animals represent and what they are thinking when they interact with us. In our encounter with wild orcas off Sri Lanka, the intense presence of these graphic, glossy black and white animals, so perfect that they almost appeared animatronic, seemed a kind of vindication of their beauty.
